Why Do I Hate Watch Star Trek Picard?

What happened to 7 of 9?

There is a divide in Star Trek fandom between those who hate the new Star Trek shows and those who hate them. Those who love the new Star Trek can't understand why some who hate the new shows continue to watch the new shows and complain about them. I hope this post will help.

1.I want to keep up with the lore. Star Trek has a deep and rich history and lore that has developed over 50 years. I have kept up for over 40 years and want to continue to know what the writers have planned to add on to the Star Trek universe. That is why many who quit Discovery kept pushing themselves to watch Star Trek Picard. Discovery doesn't add much to the universe as it is a prequel. What it does add doesn't make much sense like Spock having Vulcan dyslexia and having a secret half sister. Picard takes places after beloved Deep Space Nine and Voyager and we want to know what happened with the Federation after the end of the Dominion War and the end of Nemesis. I want to see their new missions, ships, and uniforms. What technology was added after Voyager came back with Borg technology? (Wouldn't 7 of 9 be very important to the Federation instead of being some kind of ranger? She was a scientist, not an action girl, right?)  So far, we only got that the Romulans are oppressed victims, and they use holographic controls on the bridge, use holographic personal pads and Romulan and android magic tech. (anything else?)

    2. We got teased. I remember when I first watched the pilot of Star Trek The Next Generation back in 1987. One of the highlights of the pilot was the introduction to the new ship, the uniforms, and the new tech. I remember being impressed by the new comm badge and the holodeck. I had never seen things like that before. The pilot brought me up to date with what was going on with the Federation, it introduced a new ship, and they introduced them members of the new crew.  This was the expectation with Star Trek Picard. I got teased with it with the first episode of Star Trek Picard Season 2 and that is why many of us gave Star Trek Picard a second chance. The scenes on the ship were so brief but done so well! The episode showed the new Federation and Star Fleet, and we got to take a good look at the new ships. Were the creators of Star Trek finally listening to the fans or did they just trick us into subscribing to Paramount + again?

    3. Hate watching builds community. Just like there is now a network of people who are fans of the new Star Trek shows, there is now a community of those who bash new Star Trek. There are long message boards and streams of fans coming together to discuss the terrible direction the shows are heading towards.

We can talk about the ways the shows broke continuity by talking about past episodes that were actually good. There is an argument that Star Trek has always broken continuity, while true, we also didn't have the internet and we didn't have access to every Star Trek episode unless you recorded on your VCR. Today, there really isn't an excuse. I think sometimes breaking contiuity is good. I am glad Discovery ignored the "Your world of Starship captains doesn't admit women." rule of the original Star Trek episode "Turnabout Intruder. The world of Star Trek beyond the original series era was one where humanity overcame drug and alcohol addiction, yet in Star Trek Picard the characters are constantly taking shots of hard alcohol.

Second, fans can be creative and come up with ways to fix new Star Trek so that it is less CW drama and more science fiction that fits in the Star Trek universe. I also love how fans get together with their theories that end up far better than what is shown on the show. For example, there was a whole discussion on Picard affecting World War III with his time travel and meeting the instigator Colonel Phillip Green. It gives fans a chance to be creative. (I don't mean shipping characters sexually, which is now boring.)

    4. I have hope. It took Star Trek The Next Generation at least a season and a half to become the great show we know it today. Deep Space Nine really didn't find its place until Season 3 and some will argue, Season 4. My favorite season of Voyager is Season 5! Because of the past, we are hoping that these new shows will improve with time. We hope that the creators of the new Star Trek will listen to the fans who are interested in more than just representation and cosplay. We really hoped it was turning that way with Picard because the season opened with a good episode, not great, but an episode that felt like Star Trek.

That is why some of us still hate watch new Star Trek and we keep coming back. We keep getting teased and we won't let go of hope. Paramount is making their money either way so they don't care!
