Sci-fi Movies of 1993 Year of the Fun Science Fiction Adventure Movies

Welcome to year of  Jurassic Park!  The science fiction movies are lighter and funnier.  Biotech was replacing robots. PC culture was still being debated, now it's a part of life.  Jurassic Park was the number one movie of the year. It attracted audiences with its great special effects and realistic (as I far as we knew in 1993) looking dinosaurs, wonderful acting, and a great overall, exciting story with a deep message.

What were the other sci-fi movies of 1993?

Fire in the Sky - (Sci-fi Horror Aliens) - This is a movie about alien abduction. I tried to find this movie and couldn't find it. A logger is abducted by aliens and missing for five days. Police suspect his friends murdered him.

Daybreak - (Sci fi Dystopian) In the near future, the United States is fascist and throws people who test positive for a disease in camps. If those who test positive try to escape they are shot. It was trying to make a statement about AIDS. People in the 90's didn't know it would be a respiratory virus that would almost bring us this future. It stars Cuba Gooding Jr.

Carnosaur (Sci-fi Horror Genetics) This movie was definitely developed to take advantage of the hype brought by Jurassic Park. It is based on a novel about a mad scientist trying to replace humanity with genetically created dinosaurs. It is definitely the weaker of the dinosaur movies that year,

Super Mario Bros- (Sci-fi Adventure Parallel Dimension) Of course, this movie was inspired by the popular video game of the same name. I guess it is considered science fiction because it is about parallel dimensions and how two Italian American brothers got sucked into this parallel world.

Jurassic Park (sci-fi action thriller Genetics) No surprise that this is the number one movie of the year. It was not only the top science fiction movie but it was also the top movie period. It was well written, acted, and directed with one of the best soundtracks in history. It isn't just about dinosaurs chasing humans but debates about scientific issues like chaos theory and mankind playing god. It's a modern day Frankenstein and an all time classic.

Freaked (Sci-fi Comedy Genetics) This is a science fiction black comedy that was surprisingly very good. I laughed out loud a few times, something that I don't do easily when watching movies. It is about a former child star and friends getting kidnapped by a mad scientists who turns them into freaks to be in his freak show. The freaks must band together and try to escape. It features Mr. T who was transformed into a woman.

Demolition Man (Sci-fi Adventure Cryonics Dystopia) An 80's style action hero played by Sylvester Stallone is frozen and thawed out in a sterile, boring dystopian future where violence in unknown. It satirizes the violent 80's action hero and the overprotective PC culture of the early 90's. Looks like the PC culture ultimately won. I love this movie.

Robocop 3 (Sci-fi Action Robots) Speaking of PC culture, this is a sanitized kid friendly version of Robocop and it was so horrible I couldn't finish it.

Full Eclipse (Sci-fi thriller Biotech) This was an HBO movie I have never heard of. It is about cops who inject themselves with a chemical that turns them into werewolves.

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman - (Sci-fi Horror Aliens) This is an HBO movie special starring Darryl Hannah. It is a remake of the original movie from the 1950's. An alien beams something into the main character of Nancy Archer turning her into a 50 foot woman and makes some feminist commentary.

Ghost in the Machine (Sci-fi horror Digital Network) This movie stars Karen Allen and is about a serial killer whose soul uses the computer and electrical networks to kill people.
